Complicated

Most complicated things, after all, were designed by people—a car, a clock, a computer program. That means someone, somewhere, knows how they work and can explain them.

Complex
Do not confuse what is merely complicated with what is truly complex. True complexity lives in systems that are alive with change: a national economy, a living ecosystem, the human body. You cannot understand these systems by taking them apart, because their essence lies in the unpredictable dance of their many independent parts.
Think of the global economy in early 2020. A virus in one city triggered lockdowns, idling the world's factories. Cargo ships had nowhere to go, and store shelves went bare. The shock rippled through financial markets, where fear itself caused the downturn it predicted. The response was a storm of interacting forces: governments injected trillions of dollars, companies pivoted to making new products, and workers vanished from offices. This is the nature of complex systems. They are made of countless independent agents whose interactions, not individual choices, drive the system's behavior. These systems are non-linear; a small nudge can create a tidal wave of change. They adapt and learn.

Confusion
Finally, there is confusion—a problem of a different nature entirely. It begins not in a system, but in the mind.
